6-F: Tier III Supports Within The PBIS Framework: Compare and Contrast
There are many ways schools support students with Tier III needs! The presenter will give a basic summary and comparison of three approaches to PBIS Tier III intervention: School-Based Wraparound, PTR (Prevent-Teach-Reinforce) and RENEW (Rehabilitation for Empowerment, Natural Supports, Education and Work). The presenter will also outline which types of social/emotional/behavioral challenges would best be supported by any of these interventions, and discuss readiness and commitment components necessary for the successful implementation of the interventions.

Attendees will learn about example prerequisite policies and resources which should be coordinated at both the site and district levels prior to introducing any of these interventions, to help ensure that the selected intervention will be sustainable and effective. Example readiness checklists will be provided and reviewed, which highlight the recommended action items to complete prior to launching any of these interventions.

Schools seeking to expand their menu of Tier III supports and interventions will recognize the importance of understanding the readiness and context of any intervention they are seeking to adopt. This session will provide information about three different models of intensive intervention, including information about the "first time on the west coast" RENEW model from the University of New Hampshire https://iod.unh.edu/projects/rehabilitation-empowerment-natural-supports-education-and-work-renew . The session presenter is also one of two (known) trainers of the school-based Wraparound model in California, and can speak to how schools are moving toward PBIS Tier III readiness in California.

Post - 4: Thinking Systematically about Alternatives to Exclusionary Discipline Practices
The implementation of effective student discipline practices has become a leading concern of public school administrators and educational personnel. Traditionally, districts have chosen to address student challenging behavior by applying exclusionary discipline practices (e.g., detention, suspension, and expulsion). However, there is no research demonstrating that these practices reduce the rate of student discipline. In fact, studies have found relatively high rates of disciplinary recidivism among those who are suspended. Research surrounding alternatives to reactive exclusionary discipline practices have identified proactive and positive strategies that show great promise for reducing school violence and disruptive behaviors.
In this session, participants will receive:
  • An explanation of evidence-based practices proven to reduce challenging behavior,
  • Steps for creating equitable disciplinary policies and procedures
  • Suggestions for using data to make disciplinary decisions.

Post - 7: PBIS in High Schools: Considering Context and Engaging All Stakeholders
Implementation of PBIS in high schools is different, yet the same. Unique contextual influences require high school implementers to shape critical elements to address those differences; at the same time assuring the critical features are implemented with fidelity.  Understanding the importance of these contextual influences that impact implementation allows teams to more clearly identify barriers and thus problem solve more effectively.  Imperative to addressing some of these contextual differences, students need to play an integral role in shaping the initiative. Authentic student engagement means involving students in more meaningful ways and is a powerful factor in ensuring PBIS becomes a part of the school culture. Participants will spend the day engaged in shared learning, collaborative problem solving and networking with the goal of promoting capacity development among high school implementers in California.

Post - 8: How Does Developing Mental Health Referral Pathways Support a PBIS Team?
Tier II and III PBIS teams have the opportunity to ensure that students in need of mental and behavioral health supports and services experience successful referrals. How do teams ensure this success? How do teams ensure the process is equitable and culturally responsive? No matter your school’s current stage of implementation, there are tools that can help you establish and refine your referral processes. In this interactive session, we will focus on concrete strategies and practical tools that:
  • Boost collaboration within schools and between school and other youth-serving agencies for high functioning referral pathways
  • Advance our understanding of culturally responsive and student-centered referral systems
  • Integrate student and family voice and choice in the referral pathways
Linking students to appropriate and effective services is complex work that has high return when done thoughtfully, collaboratively and equitably. Together, we investigate how youth teams can support intervention procedures for students, educators, administrators and community-based practitioners.
